Roberts-ratliff

Roberts-Ratliff is a fourth-generation landowner who lives in Winona, Mississippi and in Mableton, Georgia. Her family’s legacy in Winona began when her ancestors moved from South Carolina and bought land in Mississippi in 1927. After her father died in 2001, Roberts-Ratliff left her career in corporate sales and marketing to take over her parent's farm in Mississippi.

A legacy of leadership in timber management

Two decades of self-taught expertise have honed Roberts-Ratliff’s desire to actively help other landowners and to take on leadership roles, including serving as the first female president of the Montgomery County Forestry Association in 2011. Her involvement in forestry and government-certified tree farm management also earned her a spot on the U.S. Forest Service’s advisory committee.

An inspiration to private landowners

“Roberts-Ratliff inspires many small landowners in Mississippi,” former Mississippi State Forester, Charlie W. Morgan Jr. “She is a great role model for private landowners, who hold 86% of the forested land in the South. As a fourth-generation timberland owner, she encourages other minority landowners to sustain family forestry legacy. She also understands the economic, environmental and social benefits of having a certified tree farm, which can yield a sustainable income and higher prices for timber.”

A day in the life of Vickie Roberts Ratliff

On behalf of SGSF, KPKinteractive documented 24 hours of Roberts-Ratliff’s life as she spoke to a packed room of landowners at the Montgomery County Extension Service, gave a heritage tour of her homestead, consulted with a Natural Resources Conservation Service forester on her property, and met with two representatives of the Mississippi Forestry Commission
